SNAP! Recap {Part 1- Why It Rocked!}

Oh boy where do I begin!!!!  I have been pondering this moment all week trying to figure out how to articulate the amazing time I had at SNAP!  I have decided to break up my recap into three parts.  This way you don’t suffer from information overload, and I can allow each incredible part of my conference experience to shine!

Just Being Myself:

Last year was my first conference and I spent most of my time lost, a little lonely, and extremely intimidated by all of the amazing women in the room.  What changed for me this year, aside from having one conference notch on my belt, was my attitude. I decided to focus on observing, learning, and most importantly just being myself!  This was not easy given the amazingly talented women I was coming in contact with (and trust me there are some SUPER talented ladies at this conference.  The who’s who of the craft world if you will!)  But you know what, being myself worked!  I took that theme to heart by switching my attitude to one of learning and appreciation for the people around me, and not trying to be someone I wasn’t to impress others, I was less intimidated and got so much more out of this conference!  I was more relaxed, had more fun, and I think that opened me up to a richer conference experience that I would have had if I focused on my insecurities!

I love that the SNAP team announced the conference theme as Just Be You based off of this beautiful necklace design by Amy Cornwell.  All 325 conference attendees were given a necklace as a token of the weekend. How lucky can you get!

The Power of Women (and twelve men!):

I loved being able to reconnect with friends, and meet so many new people that I can not wait to keep in touch with and learn from. The power of being surrounded by these amazing women (and twelve men whom I did not meet but am sure their positive energy added great things to the weekend, ha!) gives me strength to keep plugging away at my business, and uplifted me to continue to believe in myself and my abilities!

Loved hanging with these girls all weekend!  Natalie from Johnny In a Dress, Heather from A Couple of Craft Addicts, me and Jen from Scissors and Spatulas.  Thanks Jen for sharing your pics!

The best roommate ever!  She had me laughing at her stories until all hours of the night!  Heather from A Couple of Craft Addicts!

Loved getting to know Jess from Sparkle Pants Girl, Amy from Pink Bow Bath Boutique, (my roomie Heather) and Joanna from Baked by Joanna who disappeared just in time for me to take a photo!

I was terrible about taking photos of people this weekend but there were many, many more ladies that made my weekend so much fun!  Bev from Flamingo Toes, Sara from Mom Endeavors, Tara from Tara Dara Made It…the list goes on and on.  You know who you are and you all are awesome!

Why SNAP! totally Rocks!

SNAP was a gathering of 325 shop owners and bloggers from the handmade community.  I could really stop there and it would be enough said, ha!  But seriously, this conference went off without a hitch.  From the minute we arrived the scenery and accommodations at Thanksgiving Point were breathtaking.  The entire weekend we were surrounded by beautiful mountains, blankets of brightly colored tulips, and a creatively decorated event venue that would make Martha Stewart giddy!  Tauni and her team (the Snapettes as they are affectionately called) left no detail unattended and their hard work, creativity, and passion for the handmade community came shining through!  I am so honored to have been a part of the weekend and can not wait to see what the future holds for SNAP!

Helping Families Find Their Creative Spot: The Story Behind Freckles Crafts

Lately I have been reflecting a lot on my business and how it has impacted my life over the last two years. The beginning of a new year, and the opportunity to start fresh with a clean slate will do that to a person :) .  I have taken the time to focus on my role as a small business owner and why I got started on this path in the first place.  Two years ago when I began this journey I never in a million years thought my business would be where it is today.  I have been privileged with opportunities I never dreamt possible, made connections and friendships that will last a lifetime, and have witnessed the fruits of my labor blossom into a thriving business where I get to make a positive impact in the lives of families everyday!  It is AMAZING!  Many of you have been with Freckles Crafts from the beginning and have made this journey possible for me.  To you I am so grateful!  For those of you just getting to know my company I thought it would be fun to share my story with you today!

My Story

When I look back on my life, I can not remember a time when I was not involved in a creative activity.  As a child crafting was a part of daily life.  My mom was very creative and was always encouraging me to bake, draw, write, and create with my hands.  Whether it was sewing, painting, pottery, paper crafting, or making something from old cereal boxes, she always encouraged me to try to make my visions a reality.  From a young age I surrounded myself with creative people.  My friends were crafty, and rather than playing with Barbies and dolls (although we did that to), we could often be found making gifts for family, embellishing our clothes and creating decorations for our rooms!  My grandma was also a huge influence on me when it came to crafting.  She was extremely talented and could crochet anything you could dream of.  When I would stay with her we would spend hours crafting, making scrapbooks (before scrap-booking was even an official hobby) and baking.  The influences I had as a child stayed with me into my adult life, and I have been so blessed to be able to pass this legacy onto my own children.

With this kind of upbringing it is so hard for me to understand how anyone could not enjoy crafts!  Ha!  It wasn’t until I had children of my own, that I finally understood not everyone enjoyed crafting!  When my children were much younger I used to attend a weekly playgroup with other moms of young children.  Most of our kids ranged in ages from newborns to around 4 years of age at the time.  Our conversations would often turn to how we kept our kids busy during the day, and I would mention that my children and I would spend time each day working on some kind of craft project.  The moms in my playgroup seemed quite shocked at this!  They made comments like “I would love to craft with my kids but I am not creative” and “I just can’t come up with any ideas”, or my favorite “It is so overwhelming to go to the store to buy craft supplies with kids, I always forget to buy something, and then we end up not being able to make the project anyway”.  Several moms even mentioned using craft kits from a {well known retailer}, however, they were so frustrated by the quality of the crafts, having to order a dozen of each item, and still needing to provide materials such as glue to complete the project, that they had given up on crafting all together!  If I heard this conversation among parents once, I must have heard it 100 times.  It was the same story over and over from frustrated parents who would love to have a crafting experience with their children but were just tired of it being so complicated.

I would often find myself thinking about these conversations, and how sad it was that these children would not have the opportunities for creative experiences in their homes because their parents were so frustrated with the process of crafting.  I thought about my own children, how much fun we have making crafts and how it enriches their education and provides hours of bonding for us.  This is when I had my AHA moment!  I decided then and there I wanted to help these parents.  I wanted to help them give their children the gift of a positive crafting experience, a sense of accomplishment from creating something with their hands, and the pleasure of giving a homemade gift to a neighbor or relative!

This is when the idea of a craft kit that contained everything necessary, right down to the glue, to complete a gift quality craft came to me.  It would be a product that parents could pull off a shelf at a moments notice and begin crafting with their kids.  A product that would take the guesswork out of creativity and eliminate the frustration that parents were feeling. A product that would make a craft that kids would be proud of, and parents would like to display in their home! It was this idea that started the launch of Freckles Crafts on March 31st, 2010.

Fast forward to today and I am still just as passionate about helping parents and children find their creative spot!  The Freckles Crafts brand continues to grow with the addition of handmade items, craft and party supplies (coming soon), and a blog full of free tutorials and resources for parents.  It brings joy to me every time I see a child’s face light up after completing a Freckles craft, or when parents thank me for helping them bring creativity into their home.  It is the reason I continue on this journey of helping people find their creative spot!

You’ve Got Questions, I’ve Got Answers {part 2}

Thank you again to everyone who continues to send questions my way!  If you missed part one you can see that post here.  As always if you have a question please feel free to post your question in the comments section, on my Facebook page or send me an email to info@frecklescrafts.com.  I love to hear from you guys!

Do you work alone or do you have help? ~Lindsey

For now it is just me, myself and I!  As my business continues to grow I am starting to realize the need to hire some help.  I just haven’t decided in what capacity yet.  It is a big commitment and I just want to make sure I make the right decision. I am open to suggestions in this area in case anyone wants to offer up their expertise!

I own an online handmade business and I want to sell my products in a brick and mortar store.  I see that you have had success in this area.  How did you do it? ~Kathy

I was lucky because the storeowner where I sell my products approached me at a craft fair to ask if I would be interested in having her shop carry my items.  I still had to negotiate the deal, however it was great luck to not have to do the initial hard sell of approaching the storeowner first.   My best advice would be to make a list of shops that would be a good fit for your products, and then set up meetings with the shop owners or (main decision maker) to discuss carrying your products.  Prior to the meeting, figure out your wholesale pricing, create a rate sheet for your products, and be prepared to negotiate your pricing during the meeting if needed.  Having your products in a brick and mortar store is an awesome achievement, but one that you need to be completely ready for. Ask yourself if you will be able to keep up with multiple sales streams and not sacrifice on the quality of your products and business.  You don’t want to spread yourself to thin, however this may be a great opportunity for business growth (if that is your goal), and therefore the extra hours of hard work may be worth it in the end!  Products that are in high demand is not a bad problem to have, and if needed you could always hire additional help!

Why don’t you share more photos of your kids and family on your blog? ~Maggie

I love social media but the one downside for me is that I am a very private person.  I was quite late to Facebook (in fact if it wasn’t for Freckles Crafts I would probably still not have an account)!  I have always kept my business world separate from my family life, and it hasn’t been until recently that I have realized that this isn’t realistic.  My business is very much a part of my everyday family life.   While I am getting more comfortable sharing pars of my personal life (mostly through my Instagram feed where I only have 11 followers, ha!), it is just not something that comes easily for me.  I am just not comfortable putting certain information out there especially when it comes to my kids.  I get asked this question a lot, and I guess it boils down to as a blogger and business owner I had to decide from the beginning how much I was willing to put out there about my personal life and stick to it.  I love to catch a glimpse into the lives of business owners whom I admire, and I wish I were more comfortable in this department.  I know that it could ultimately be better for my business especially since it would help to bring a more personal side to may company.  I think this is an area that I will just have to evolve in as I become more comfortable, and I hope that everyone will continue to be patient as I figure that part out! :)

What would you suggest to put in a craft kit at home when you are not so crafty? ~Jackie

I love that you ask this question because I feel that everyone should have a basic craft supply stash on hand whether they are crafty or not!  Giving your kids access to craft materials helps to build their creativity, problem solving skills, and confidence (see this post on the importance of crafting with kids).  Plus you will be amazed at what they can some up with from a few basic materials!  With that said, here are a few must haves for any craft supply box:

  • Scissors (make sure to have a small size for little hands)
  • glue sticks
  • chenille stems
  • construction paper or card stock
  •  white copy paper
  • crayons
  • markers
  • stickers
  • air dry clay (if your kids are a little bit older and will not eat it)
  • Washable paint and sponge brushes

I also think it is great to add recycled items to your craft supply kit.  Clean egg cartons, buttons, plastic yogurt cups, and cereal boxes are fun and easy to craft with.  With just a few basic supplies your kids will be able to come up with a multitude of projects.  If you still feel intimidated about crafting with your kids, why not keep a few craft kits on hand!  They are perfect when you would like to work on a more detailed project, or for those days when your child may not be satisfied with coming up with their own ideas.  Craft kits are especially nice for those moments because they contain everything you need to complete the craft and you don’t need to worry about whether or not you have the supplies on hand. If you need more suggestions on what to add to your craft stash feel free to review this list of my favorite craft supplies for kids!

Happy Crafting!
