Today’s guest is familiar face around here!  I met Heather last year at a creative conference and immediately was drawn to her sweet personality, and creative energy! Since then I have had the privilege of working with her on several projects, and I am so excited because we will be roomies at a the SNAP conference in April!  You may remember Heather from from the Back To School Series I did a few months ago.  She shared this awesome tutorial on how to create a personalized school supply set and backpack!  Heather is back today to share with us her newly relaunched business called Brie Brie Blooms, and to share with us some great tips on how she balances work and raising a family!

Please tell us about your company and products.

A few years ago I launched Brie Brie Blooms as a result of getting laid off while on maternity leave.  It started when I decided I could make cute hair clips and headbands for my daughter.  Friends started seeing my daughter wearing them and asked if I could make more.  Eventually I was making hair clips for everyone I knew with a little girl!  I branched out to clothing and added more accessories to the products I started selling.  Suddenly I realized my little hobby had evolved into an actual business.  Instead of trying to be good at everything, I decided to focus on one area to bring a higher skill level to my products.  As a result, the Brie Brie Blooms signature is distressed and vintage looking iron on patches.  The patches are hand painted and feature an easy iron on backing.  They can be used on clothing, home decor items, accessories, or whatever else you choose to embellish.  Unique Brie Brie Blooms products can be found in local boutiques and the collection of iron on patches available to purchase online is growing.  I’m very excited about new designs coming soon!
What do you love about owning your own business and working from home?
Prior to owning my own business I spent a lot of time in an office and frequently traveled for work.  I was lucky and able to stay home with my daughter after she was born.  My business definitely has evolved as my daughter has grown.  I love that I’m able to adjust my hours and the time I spend in my office as my daughter is getting more involved with activities.  I am typically up working well after everyone in my house has gone to sleep; for now it is definitely worth being able to spend more daytime hours with my daughter!  The second best thing I love is seeing other people get excited about my products!  I can honestly say each order brings the same giddy butterflies I felt with my very first customer!
What advice can you offer to others who are looking to start their own home based business?

Starting a home based business involves more than just making products you love.  Take the time to learn your city and state regulations.  I was lucky and had a mentor that helped me from the beginning.   If you don’t know someone that owns a similar business, reach out to other small business owners online.  I have built great friendships and learned so much by simply initiating a few emails.  Blogs are great places to make friends!

What is your favorite holiday tradition?

My husband and I both have our own family traditions but we wanted to start something new for us.  Last year we wrapped matching pajamas and left the package on our doorstep Christmas Eve morning.  We rang the doorbell and my daughter was really excited to find the package that Santa had sent early.  We made sure to wear our pajamas that night so Santa would know we loved the gift he sent.  My daughter is just old enough to get really excited about our new tradition.  I’m already looking forward to our pajama present that will be waiting at our door this Christmas Eve!

What is your favorite homemade gift to give?

My mom has been baking pumpkin rolls for friends and family for as long as I can remember.  They are absolutely delicious and everyone anticipates receiving their own roll during the holiday season.  A few years ago I tried making my own but it ended with a huge mess in my kitchen and nothing pretty enough to share with anyone.  I’ll leave the baking to my mom!

Thanks Heather for a great interview, and for sharing some amazing business tips with us! If you would like to connect with Heather, please visit her Etsy shop and blog or you can find her on Facebook and Twitter!

This week has been full of amazing interviews with small business owners and giveaways! I am sad that it is going to come to an end tomorrow!  Don’t worry though you still have time to enter several of the giveaways!  The Scentsy, Violet’s Bags, Kiwi Avenue Jewelry, and MomVantage giveaways are all still open!

Ok now on to today’s guest!

I was recently introduced to today’s guest after her husband had come across my Facebook page and contacted me to see if we could somehow collaborate on a new website they recently launched called the Crochet Network.  After chatting a bit, I learned that his wife Allie, owns her own business called Crochet by Allie.  She is a very talented crafter, and after seeing her products I knew her company would be perfect to feature during the Freckles Crafts Small Business Week! Take a look at some of her handmade items!

Is this not the cutest hat ever?

Nope, I think this one is the cutest ever!

If I only had a little girl to buy this for.  Seriously cute!

I am obsessed with this hat and totally want it in my size (which Allie can do by the way!)

And just when you thought the only thing she makes is hats! She is one talented lady!

But enough from me.  Her is Allie to tell you more about her business!

My name is Allie and live in Utah where I have been my whole life. My husband had a crochet baby blanket that he recently passed on to our first born son. This blanket is very old and became worn quickly so I went online to find out how to make a new one and ever since then, I have been making many different items.  Just this past year, my husband created a website for me so I can share my wonderful items with everyone. My boy was born with a cleft lip and palate and we were blessed to get him in to Shriners Hospital for kids in Portland Oregon. I have been trying to get a hold of them to see about creating a bunch of hats to donate since they have done so much for us.

All my items are made in a smoke-free home and made to order. Before sending the product to my customer, I make sure that I am 100% satisfied with it or else it must be re-made.  Recently someone ordered a hat and after it was done, I had realized the blue was a shade darker than the one in the picture she ordered, so I set that one aside and made a new one.  Custom orders are welcome and helps me out if picture samples are included with your request so I may see how difficult it will be and give an estimated cost.

We always have many deals, specials and give-aways going on because I know that sometimes you just need a helping hand in life and love helping and sharing with others.  My husband does web-programming for a living, so he helps me add new features to my site all the time. He also created a Craft/Crochet network site to help others get their sites noticed. To submit your craft site to the online directory, please visit http://crochetnetwork.com and don’t hesitate to contact us with requests, trades, suggestions or anything else you can think of.

Me and my husband work very well together and he helps me out so much!  This past few months have been fantastic getting into the online craft world and getting my products out there.  It’s the best thing in the world to hear how much everyone loves my hand-made items and give me the drive to continue.

I am still fairly new to the online craft business, but the best thing that I have found is to spread the word locally to family and friends, share your items and get people talking about them.  Have them talk about them to their extended family and friends.  When we go to the local store, my kids are always wearing my hats and everyone always comments on how great they are.  I recently printed off some cards with my logo and website on them so I can hand them out to people. Lastly, find others online that can help promote your site and products and be sure to post them on a social networking site. For crafty websites, they can be submitted for free to the Crochet Network at http://crochetnetwork.com as I mentioned before where it will be a great resource for others to search for online craft sites.

Thanks to Freckles Crafts for this opportunity to share what I love to a wider audience and hope you enjoy my few words that I had to say.

Thanks Allie for your great business tips and for sharing your company with us!  If you would like to connect with Allie please feel free to visit her on Facebook, Twitter, or through her website!

=======================================

Owning a startup company has been a huge learning experience for me, and while Freckles Crafts has come a long way since the day I opened my virtual doors, it has not been without some bumps in the road.  I have learned a lot from other business owners, and also from my own mistakes!  One valuable lesson I have learned throughout this entire process is to never get too big for your britches (one of my mom’s favorite phrases), or in other words stay humble. This little bit of advice brings me to today’s featured guest.

I “met” Jessie of MomVantage almost two years ago when she contacted me about doing a review of my craft kits on her blog.  At the time, I had not heard of the MomVantage blog as Jessie had just started blogging a few months prior.  I remember Jessie contacted me at a time when I had just finished a large round of reviews and giveaways, and I was starting to have to turn people away.   I was a little hesitant at first to work with a “newbie” (LOL!), and ship a box of FREE craft kits that I spent hours packaging nonetheless.  I also thought maybe I should just wait for a “bigger blogger” to review my products so I could get more exposure.   In the end I got over being a {blog snob}, humbled up, and took a chance on Jessie and MomVantage.  Thank goodness I did because working with Jessie over the past two years has been a blessing not only for me personally but also for my business, and while we have never met in person I value our relationship so much.  Jessie’s blog MomVantage has now exploded into a booming business, and is so much fun to read.  I love that you never know what you will get on MomVantage, but you always get something good.  From product reviews and giveaways, to kids crafts, recipes, funny parenting stories and more, MomVantage is one of my favorite daily reads!  Just think, we would not be here today if I hadn’t stayed humble.  Guess my parents were right after all…but don’t tell them I said that!

I am so proud to introduce you to Jessie from MomVantage!  Take it away Jessie!

Please tell us about your company and products

MomVantage is a family friendly blog that features great product reviews, giveaways, recipes, kids crafts, and much more.

What do you love about owning your own business and working from home?

I have been blogging since August 2010, and I love it. It is great to be able to pursue my passion (writing) while still being able to be home with my kids.

What advice can you offer to others who are looking to start their own home based business?

Network!! Make friends online – you will be amazed by some of the fantastic people that you can meet and build personal and working relationships with. Keep at it – an online presence takes time. Don’t get discouraged!!

What is your favorite holiday tradition?

My favorite holiday tradition is the Holiday Basket. We set out baskets on Christmas Eve instead of stockings. My mom started this tradition and it is something that I have carried on with my kids.

If you like to craft/bake what is your favorite homemade gift to give?

I love to give cookies, and I often put together my own gift baskets for people. I have also made beaded star ornaments, mini felt and wool gnomes, and crystal and bead sun catchers.

Thanks Jessie for sharing with us.  If you would like to learn more valuable business tips or network with Jessie, please feel free to connect with her on Facebook, Twitter or her blog!
